Muscle Work
Dry needling
Dry needling is a technique in which very small monofilament needles (similar to acupuncture needles) are inserted into the tight, tender and inflamed areas. By doing this, a healing response is triggered in the body which helps to reduce muscle spasm and decrease pain and inflammation. Dry needling is similar to acupuncture in that both use a needle inserted into the skin to affect change in the body. The two main differences between acupuncture and dry needling is that (1) acupuncture treats for the purpose of altering the flow of Qi (or energy) along traditional Chinese meridians while dry needling follows evidence-based guidelines, recommended “point” locations, and the treatment of specific conditions and (2) dry needling typically inserts the needle deeper into muscle tissue as compared to some of the more superficial needling of acupuncture.
cupping
Cupping is a technique in which special plastic cups are placed on the skin and a vacuum is used to create negative pressure within the cup. This causes an upwards pull on the tissue underneath the cup. In our clinic, we utilize two types of cupping (1) static cupping, causing the classic circular bruises and (2) dynamic cupping, taking less suction and moving the cup across the length of the muscle and tight tissue (think the opposite of a massage, pull/stretch instead of push/compress.)
IASTM - Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (eg. Graston Technique)
Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization is a technique involving the utilization of specifically designed handheld tools. We use these rigid tools to deliver a consistent treatment pressure the treatment area. IASTM is used to break up muscle and soft tissue adhesions, relieve muscle trigger points, and cause a local inflammatory response, increasing blood flow to a treatment area, to promote the body to heal.
myofascial therapy
Myofascial therapy is a technique that is performed directly on the skin. Our doctors use a trained sense of touch and knowledge of anatomy to detect myofascial restrictions and/or adhesions. Myofascial therapy will incorporate specific hand placement to specific muscles while moving the muscle through its range of motion to increase blood flow to a treatment area, cause a local inflammatory response to promote the body to heal, break up muscle adhesion and relieve muscle trigger points.
